Antibiotic use in Pichia cultures - (Mar/10/2005 )
Im having some trouble keeping my Pichia cultures contamination free. Im growing them in shake flasks and noticed (by plating the sample on LB and BHI agar) that many of the flasks are harboring bacteria. I would like to use some antibiootics in the culture without effecting the protien expression in the Pichia. I have seen that others out there are wondering why there protien is not expressed in the Pichai system and I can tell you that if you get bacterial contamination in your yeast the protien may well be degraded by the bacterial proteases.
any one know a good antibiotic to use?

Id say that no antibiotic is the best antibiotic. I would think it is better to ferret out the contamination at its source by performing well-controlled experiments instead of using potentially harmful antibiotics in your cultures.
