Ligation buffer - DTT in ligation buffer (Dec/26/2008 )

Why is DTT (Dithiothreitol) a common component of any ligation buffer?

Everybody always say that it is because it is a great reducing agent. I don't know how that works. Wikipedia did not resolve it for me.
