BSA is able to stop an enzymatic reaction? - (Dec/02/2008 )


Does anyone knows how to explain me how a Buffer containing BSA is able to stop an enzymatic reaction?
The mixture then needs to be centrifuged?

BSA normally can't but the buffer possible can.
You have to give more specific information to answer the question. wink.gif

BSA or other albumins are used for several reasons in buffers and cell culture media; indeed, albumins are used to reduce protease activity against cell proteins; it is not really a stop but increasing the substrate for proteases, and therefore, protecting your proteins of interest;

also albumins may immobilize various lipophilic and hydrophylic moolecules (including proteins) that act as co-factors or effectors in enzymatic reactions
