use of direct current for electrophoresis - (Nov/01/2004 )

can anyone tell me -
why do we use direct current for protein or DNA electrophoresis?
thanks in advance.

Because the DNA/protein is negatively charged and will walk towards the positive electrode. If alternating current would be used, where the poles are continoulsy changing with the frequency, the DNA woould be stuck in the well.
