0.2 M sodium acetate buffer at pH 3.0 - (Nov/12/2008 )

Hi. I'm dentist trying to get a study underway for my degree.
My chemistry is very rusty.

I need to make a batch of 0.2 M sodium acetate buffer at pH 3.

Can anybody help me with the exact composition that I'll need?

Thank you for your help.
I really appreciate it!

The quick answer is to use one of the many web tools ( eg http://www.egr.msu.edu/biofuelcell/tools/a...te/acetate.html ), but I would recommend doing a check by hand (esp as it is a study question) to make sure they have done their calculations correctly.

ph= -log(Ka) +log([base]/[acid]) pKa for acetate is 4.74

pH range for sodium acetate buffer is pH 3,7 - 5,7 therefor no solution is possible for a pH 3
