TC Hood & incubator contamianted - (Aug/20/2008 )

For reasons that are unclear to anyone, our lab tech decided to work with his concentrated yeast culture in our TC hood that we normally use for mammalian cell culture. This clearly is a problem.

Does anyone have a good protocol to decontaminate the TC Hood and the incubator?

Best way whould be fumigation but it is costly. Other wise you can buy disinfectant and clean the hood with it and then turning the UV on for long time to make sure.
We had a fungus contamination and control it with this method. thouch the wood!
I can check the name of disinfectant which is for all purposes and tell you tomorrow.

Virkon or Trigene work well, followed by 70%EtOH.

There are these wipes called Sporicidin-- from VWR I think. It kills everything!
I'd wipe down everything with those then autoclave your shelves (if you can) otherwise, follow up with 70% ETOH.

Had a similar issue with a new TC tech- she was great at culturing mold... but not so great with culturing anything mammalian.
