ELISA protocol for testing HIV/AIDS - Anyone know how I can get qualified to do this? (Jul/01/2008 )

Hello biggrin.gif ,
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a site which delineates the protocol for doing ELISAs to test for the human immunodeficiency virus.
I'm interested in learning how to do the technique so that I may volunteer or work at a testing clinic. I'm studying biology with a focus on cellular/molecular biology and immunology. I've been working as a volunteer at a local npo health clinic that offered free hiv/aids testing. I tested persons for HIV with the Orasure kit, which is a mouthswab kit; and counseled them on how to decrease their risk of being exposed and infected.
As I'm working in a respiratory research center, I can potentially get training to do the ELISA antibody/antigen examination for HIV.
Thank you for your time!

I suspect that most HIV testing is done by automated instrumentation by Abbott, Siemens, etc in a hospital lab or sent out to a reference laboratory. Sample volumes would be high so automated instruments are used...no manual testing. However, I suggest you get training for PCR or other esoteric HIV testing which would be manual.

You can also look online for the automated instruments and how they are used. In large labs MT students do the high volume testing...basically load instruments. Other personnel do the manual based tests such as reading slides, GC-Mass spec, bone marrows, coag, etc.

Don't worry about 'aids' elisa. If you know elisa all the formats are similar you can run any test. Allergy, drug of abuse, hormone, steroid, cardiac marker etc.

Good luck.
