could somebody please explain to me the difference in the use of lithium chloride instead of sodium chloride in e.g. IP wash buffers....

As far as I remember LICl is mainly used in Etanol pp of DNA to precipitate samples containing SDS because the salt precipitate can be more easily washed away by 70% Ethanol rinse (Li- SDS salts are more soluble into the water than the Na-SDS)
