Does anyone know the difference between the two?

each notion is not precise, and must be clarified from the context; both terms imply that whole cells were processed; at least, in the case of "lysate", one would expect that a lysis was done

Hi, normally, whole cell sample could imply that you want keep them alive in a e.g. freezing solution for storing and thaw them later for restart your cell colture.
Otherwise, a whole cell sample is just the first step in collecting cells that will be lysated later for biochemical/proteomic/mol.biol. (ecc ecc) purposes.
