DNA isolation - PBS wash (Jan/24/2008 )

why is it necessary to wash the cells with PBS??? i knows that it removes the contamination. but how do the chemicals in PBS buffer play a role in removing contamination?
thanks in advance

I think PBS is used to don't affect the cells that much. PBS has salt concentrations that allow to maintain the tonicity of the cells.

PBS is saline. It is used because its an isotonic solution.
