yes phage you're right, the solution stayed blank until I've added NaOH (20g per liter).

i use it for epitope retieval (i suppose its a different kind of soap to sds - or am i completely deluded in this matter?)

maybe detergent would be a better word

edta is neither a soap nor a detergent. it is not a surfactant, it is a chelator (it is found in shampoos and other soaps and detergents to "soften" the wash water).
