function of restriction enzymme - (Aug/23/2007 )

hi would anyone like to enlighten me with the original function of restriction enzyme...as in what use are the enzymes to the bacteria. thanks!

Host (ie the bug) protection against pathogens, such as phage. The phage DNA won't have the same methylation patterns as the bacteria, so it gets chopped up by the enzyme.

Yeah, we could say they are part of the “immune system” of bacteria!
