Does anyone know the effects of residual phenol present in DNA preps?

phenol is inhibitory to most enzymatic manipulations. Polymerases are not effected.
phenol also makes cells unhappy thus DNA laced with phenol can not be used in micro injection work, cell transformation efficiency in reduced.

That is new to me. I have the experience that PCR doesn't work well when residual phenol is present!?!
