Ethidium Bromide Properties - Hazard (May/12/2007 )

just curious... does ethidium bromide evaporate if you leave a tray full of dilute EtBr exposed to the air? are there any papers or articles that discuss the properties and dangers of leaving dilute EtBr out on the bench, with the lid unsealed.

I just know that the UV light will degrade the EtBr. About evaporation, I doubt it will actually evaporate. Why not you do an experiment? Put it out few days and have a look. If the brown colour is gone, then you will know what happen. Design parameter like with UV and without UV. Have fun. wink.gif

how about "greenish color" appearing after a couple of weeks.. what does that mean

Greenish? That's weird. If I were you, I wouldnt use the EtBr. And a couple weeks? Hmmm it is too long to leave it for couple of weeks if it is used for extensively staining. wink.gif

its not used for staining.. its just left on a tray connected to a filter, but the filter's not working. so its stuck at the top.
