what does it mean by pUC, pCR, and other vector names??
I m sure there must a meaning to all the words and numbers in the plasmid vector name, I tried looking online but couldnt find any explanation.
Your help will be appreciated.
Thanks

In the dim distant past, people used their initials as names for plasmids. This is still sometimes done, but now there is often a tendency to use the initials arbitrarily or to assign some technical meaning to them. There is no set of consistent rules.

-phage434-

I got this question when I had my presentation. Haha....
Anyway, I can only answer p stands for plasmid. For others like pUC or pQE, it is up to the manufacturer.

Not sure whether it is right or not. biggrin.gif

phage434 is right (as usual).

pUC = University of California
pJP = John Pemberton
pCR = clever name for a vector used to clone PCR products

thats nice info Zouden, how about pBR?

another one that i know is pKD series in the lamda-red swaps using PCR method, it stands for K. Datsenko, the author of the paper.

in our lab we use also initials, so in my case my plasmids are coded pAL---.

From Wikipedia:
"pBR322 was the first artificial plasmid created by Bolivar and Rodriguez and was named eponymously after the scientist duo. "

Mostly though, the origin of the names are pretty difficult to track down.

cool..sometimes these were the kind of info that we dont pay much attention of, however ther are very interesting to know too.

how bout pDrive vector and pQE vector? I used that. So kinda curious.

I think for pQE, it will be Qiagen something... =)

so, anyone can name a plasmid the way he/she likes ! smile.gif

I guess so. It doesnt really have a standard thing as long as you put a p in front of a vector's name. happy.gif
