I will recommend to not do lots of protocols without check first what is the purpose of your study...I have seen a lots of students that made lots of protocols and when the time for thesis comes they gone nuts because lots of data and don't know what to do with it. so first ask what is the purpose of study, what is the hypothesis and what result i expect, then how I could get those results and finally what are the best protocols to get them, in this manner you will not loose your time doing experiments that results can't be use. for example
you want to know if the gene is polymorphic and how it compare in the different breeds and how it evolution then you can do PCR, and sequencing and phylogenetic trees and so on.
But first sit down with PI and stablish the important things of study...or you will loose many years...
