A basic question about DNA extraction - (Dec/07/2006 )

As we know, we remove the protein by using Phenol: chroloform( of course, we can use other reagents for this purpose). Basically, in most DNA extraction/purification method, we first use Phenol: Chloroform to remove the protein, and then use Chloroform to remove the phenol residue. But in some method such as some CTAB method, pepole directly use Chlorophorm to remove protein. I am confused with that. Does Chlorophorm work good for removing protein? Can Chlorophorm be used for any method for this purpose( remove protein)? Any discussion/ suggestion will be appreciated.

I guess in the in-between layer between the chloroform and the water layer, the proteins & cell debris is collected.
