collagen H&E staining - tissue collagen staining (Nov/07/2006 )
hello i'm brand new to histology, i was asked to do a invivo study on "capsule formation". this involvs the formation of collagen fibers over a biomaterial (foreign body reaction). have a few basic doubts in staining.
1. H&E stain (Hematooxylin, Eosin) - can it stain collagen fibers. Will the collagen fibers be differntiated from the cells surrounding them?
2. What is the difference between staining collagen with H&E, Mason's Trichrome stain and Movat Pentachrome stain.
3. Any can let me know the supplier for Mason's stain( i suppose its a kit) and Movat stain. I couldn't source out from the net/references.

If you want to see specifically collagen, why not use an immunostaining?
H&E stains nucleus and cytoplasm in general; I am staining fibrotic lesions in the lung with high collagen accumulation. Cells are stained with H&E but not extracellular collagen. Mason Trichrom is the most popular dye for collagen staining.
