CTAB - function of CTAB in DNA extraction (Sep/27/2006 )

Hi,
I try to figure out what is the function of CTAB in DNA extraction?
Why we only use it mostly in plant extraction?
is there any other uses of CTAB?

Thanks

CTAB is a detergent that helps lyse the cell membrane, however it is pretty poor with denaturing proteins so something with a longer tail is usually used for extraction.

According to my opinion CTAB-NaCl solution binds with the Proteins in the digested Cell lysate and helps in seperation of DNA from Protein making intermediate ring of protein. Hope this helps u smile.gif
