What is your dream of being a scientist? - (Sep/12/2006 )

Pages: Previous 1 2 3 4 Next

My dream is :
1)to get my PhD (just to be able to say I have one will be amazing)
2)to shift gears and move my plant pathology from the lab to the field where I'll be studying things I truly care about
3)to develop an inexpensive, feasible plan for sustainable agriculture and implement it in both developed and developing countries
4)to be happy and at peace smile.gif

That was my dream until diploma:

Hi all

It is so calming to here from you guyz talking and chit chating about Science, it so funny when you realise that science doesn't have money but gives you a good status, you know what I mean? And indeed we will hold on to science just to retain that "intellectual, hard worker" name, yet struggling every inch of the way for an example get a paper out, or perhaps get a paper out but all of a sudden it get banned or rejected for some stupid reasons.

But hey I'm still holding on to Science bcos realy my long term goals are still in Science, I'm thing or finishing my Doctorate (oh ya I'm actually doing my doctorate in technology rather than PhD, is there a difference really, I know status wise there is a difference but can someone tell me if I will be restricted to somethings just bcos I'm doing Dtech instead of PhD). Okey after finishing my Dtech I want to persue a Public Health management degree so I can open my own centre preferably "Diabetes centre" bcos I'm more interested in Clinical Science rather than lab work.....

Any prestigous comments?

I am still very naive. I just want to make contributions in infectious diseases research though my contributions may not be significant. (However, life always play a fool on me. dry.gif )
Just wonder if we can really make money from science?? So far, I believe that we can, unless we can invent something like PCR, which is heavily patented. If that happens, I will disappear from scientific research immediately and live happily forever with those money. rolleyes.gif

Likewise. My scientific dream? It's selfish, but specific. I want to contribute real effort in research associated with the genetic disease Friedreich's ataxia (FA). Hopefully, I can help uncover the percise function(s) of the protein frataxin -- which is deficient in FA patients -- and apply those findings to real treatment...the "c" word might be too dreamy. I figure I'll be in school forever, and that a PhD is inevitable. I'm motivated, and I've got faith in my wits and creativity.

"So I believe it's only a matter of time" said the ego. rolleyes.gif

I have two dreams.

First I want to genome-sequence the entire Iceland, because it's such a small and at the same time conserved population. And then make complete desease prediction for the people who would like to and genealogy trees and virtualy anything. Really nationwide genome analyses. Only things I have to do is to persuade Icelandic goverment to support this project and wait till someone invents sequencing machine, that would make a complete genome sequence from one blood sample wink.gif

The other one is to push molecular biology a bit forward creating the most realistic computer model of a cell/organism. Only input data would be a chemical structure of proteins and substrates and this would run in a huge supercomputer and calculate the behaviour. The computed results would be compared with biological findings and the model would be updated. On the other hand, computer would suggest new interactions to be validated in vivo to let the computer make a complex picture, that no human can keep in head. Mutual cooperation of scientists and a machines, yay smile.gif
