temperature stable buffers? - Does snyone know a buffer which has a stable pH at various temperatures? (Sep/11/2006 )

Hi!

I have stumbled on the little problem that my pH varies with temperature which in turn can effect my results quite a lot.
Does anyone know of a buffer system which has a stable ph at different temperatures?
Perhaps by mixing different buffers which goes in opposite directions?
I'm looking for something that buffers in the range of 7-8 and has a stable pH at roomtemperature (18-25 degrees Celsius). I know that a phosphate buffers are quite stable but I can unfortunately not use that.

greatful for any kind of help smile.gif

hepes has a pK of 7.55 and the pH will drop only 0.01 pH units for each 10C rise in temperature.

In general inorganic buffers pH is less temperatrue dependent that pH of organic buffers.

Look for book Buffer Solutions by Rob Beynon, IIRC it contains list of over 100 buffers, all with information about pH vs T changes.
