DNA Extraction From Hair - very small amounts (Aug/01/2006 )

I'm trying to extract DNA from very small pieces of hair (let's not go into the fact that hair shafts don't bear genomic DNA). Does anyone out there use a protocol in which they lyse hair and recover very small amounts of DNA?

I'm probably thinking of a modified rodent tail protocol but I don't want to go down the route of buying a kit (expense) and I really don't want to lose any of the DNA that's in there (I'm looking at trying to recover ~500pg).

I could run in a few directions here but I'm on my own with this one so a little input may be helpful.

There are several protocols from forensic laboratories in the web/published.
For my samples with low DNA content (DNA from insect eggs) I use commercial kits (M & N) and phenol/chloroform protocol (with changes for invertebrate samples). Both worked ok for PCR, RE cutting, liagtion etc. So I would try out and improve later if necessary.
