Is "G" in Kozak consensus sequence right after "ATG" necessa - (Jun/11/2006 )

The Kozak consensus sequence is GCCGCCACCATGG
I want to know whether the "G" right after the start codon "ATG" is necessary.
If the "G" is necessary, sometimes it will change the protein normally encoded by the initial codon.

Thank you !

I make the primer such that the first aminoacid after start codon is glycine, which is small and not a problem and starts with G (for eg. GGA)

Nope, made quite a few fusion proteins. After the ATG I regularly start with the second codon of the protein.
