DNA isolation from feathers - (May/27/2006 )

hi all, i need protocols for isolation of genomic DNA from bird featherse
can anyone please guide me........

There is a method in this paper:
Barnes I et al (1998) INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OSTEOARCHAEOLOGY 8 (4): 280-287

Its a modified version of the method used by Ellegren (1991) Nature 354, 113

It works well for modern and museum material and is very quick.

hi, ecoli12

here is another paper that you can refer. "High yield DNA extraction from the snake cast-off skin or bird feathers using collagenase" published by Tomoko Eguchi & Yukinori Eguchi; Biotechnology Letters 22: 1097–1100, 2000. This paper has described the procedures in very details. and yield high quality of DNA. Cheap but time consuming..smile.gif
hope it helped..
