Quick help on determining protein size - (Apr/24/2006 )

Hi! If a gene for a protein has 1460 bp, what's the size of the protein produced, how do you determine that?

-smoochiepie79-

you multiplicate by 110, which is the mean weight of aminoacids.

your protein should be around 160 kDa.
However keep in mind that there can be some post translational modifications.

Hi.

Divide the number of bases by 3 (gives you the number of exons;=486.667). THEN multiply by 110 (average MW of an amino acid residue; =58500 Da; 58 kDa).

Oh yes Swanny you're right, I mixed the bp and the aminoacids ! rolleyes.gif
Then the protein should be around 58 kDa
