"Roswell Park memorial institue"

What do you mean with specific action? You use it to grow cells of mammalian origin if you suplement it with varying amounts of FCS/FBS (fetal calf/bovine serum).

A name that becomes increasingly less accurate with time.

You can also use DMEM (Dubelcco's Modified Eagle Media) to grow mamalian cells.
RPMI is used not only to grow mamalian cells but it is also very good for growing certain types of parasites.

RPMI (1640) can also be used to grow some fungal cells (Cryptococcus neoformans) wink.gif
