Here in the future, we use 13-C labeled compounds and mass spec, not 14-C and radioactivity. This is still a popular way of tracing metabolic pathways.

in that case, the only thing i can think of would be to use a pH indicator in the reaction and watch the color change over time. keep in mind that co2 evolved may exit the reaction vessel (plate) if it is not sealed.

 

although, maybe you can find a way to use a 13c tracer, as suggested by phage434.

Yeah, sorry stable-isotopes is what I was thinking of, but then got a little lost for the term...
