why only SDS - (Sep/09/2010 )

why do we use only SDS in PAGE?? why cant it be some other detergent like butanyl sulfate??

sds was found to be highly efficient in solubilizing and dissociating protein complexes. that and its ability to part a (roughly) equivalent charge density to the proteins makes it useful for separations based on size.

the long hydrophobic tail wraps around the hydrophobic parts of the protein.
