graduate school - (Aug/18/2009 )
Hi everyone,
I recently approached a PI in aussie uni about a rather interesting project to do for my masters and PhD (I can upgrade after a year of masters to a PhD). The project is top notch and very relevant. However, the PI is almost certain that I cannot get a scholarship since I am a recent graduate without honors ( I know i know i sort of snoozed and cruzed my way thru undergrad, learnt my lesson tho!). So I am going to have to pay the full fees for the project on my own. Its quite abit of money and my parents can sponsor me.
I also have another project here in Singapore (yo!). Its to start as an RA then do my masters then doctorate. I am not so sure about schloarship opportunities. The PI has shown quite abit of interest in taking me in. I am going to talk to this other PI in the lab with abit more experience about me getting the scholarship.
Is doing the project down under better tho it will be expensive or should I stay in singapore.. anyone else went through grad school without scholarships out there?

Why don't you do honours then? (or aren't you able to get into an honours programme either??)
Honours is one year, so paying for the tuition for that- then getting a scholarship for a PhD would be a financially better way to go. Would your prospective aussie PI be interested in taking you on as an honours student??

My cap score just misses the cutoff for honors, I have yet to ask the aussie PI about that. My basic degree is from NUS u know. Are you allowed to do honors and basic degress from 2 different schools?
Yes you can do honours at a different university. We have several overseas students or students who did degrees at diff universities doing honours in our department. You should definitely speak to the PI about this option. What was the cutoff for honours at your school, it might be lower at other universities??

you are studying in australia? I am terribly afraid that I might not be able to get the scholarship after the masters program when I want to upgrade.
Are there any other options available to international students when it comes to funding. My friend who went to the states got a private donor who was interested in his research feild to fund him. Any such options there?
Some PI is willing to pay you the scholarship and pay for the full cost of the PhD training.
You may ask the aussie PI about it.
