In this case, your cover letter *is* your email. Write up a nice email describing who you are, why you would like to work for him/her and, importantly, why you are a good match for the lab. Include your CV below in text form (as some people do not like to open attachments from strangers), but also attach it to the email as well in a universal format (ie. don't use *.docx). Also, CV's are not resumes and do not need to be restricted to one page and, in fact, become quite lengthy for an experienced scientist.

I think it would be better to write an actual letter and mail it, along with your CV, unless you're responding to an advertisement and they asked for email.

Hey,

I would suggest writing a cover letter which is yr email, send a CV which explains yr research experience but not in great details and attach a draft of yr research experience, which has say 2 pages of the work that you have done. So the idea is that people should get a flavour of yr work thru yr CV and if they are interested in knowing more about it, they can read yr research experience. The problem is that if you include it in yr CV, then it may just make yr CV too lengthy and boring to read.

Hope it helps

Best,
TC
