The goal of this course is to give an introduction to a broad range of state-of-the-art cell biological methods and to provide a forum for active cross-communication with an aim towards illuminating outstanding challenges in the field of cell biology. A strong emphasis will be on live cell imaging methods together with detailed modeling.
We will encourage interdisciplinary and quantitative approaches to bring single molecule analysis into context with the behavior of whole systems.
The course is aimed at PhD students and postdocs interested in cell biology. We wish to attract both cell biologists who want to learn quantitative methods, and also researchers from other disciplines (physics, engineering, computer science, etc.) who want to use their expertise to cell biological problems.
Cell biology is undergoing tremendous changes. Researchers from neighboring disciplines such as developmental biology but also mathematicians, physicists, and IT specialists are increasingly interested in cell biological problems. New technologies are continuously emerging. Their possibilities and limitations need to be taught. EMBL-CBB is combining traditional approaches with the latest imaging and computational technologies, in a way that is unique in Europe. This course will not only introduce the participants to some of the latest developments in cell biology. It will show how new technologies are efficiently integrated into cell biology and how cell biology in turn spawn new technologies.
