Hi.
I was just interested what kind of operating system people are using.
I just heard that MacOS is very popular in the US, und in germany biologists are to lazy to get rid of windows,...

hi dersven,
i predict most people will be using windows, since it is the os installed by default in most computers. macosx is pretty but expensive, and linux can be pretty but it's not widespread. i've seen mainly postdocs using macs.

Here in Quebec (Canada), almost every PI are using Macs. Sexier of course, and as they claim, more effective and working a lot better than Windows. But they all have problem when talk-time arrives :)

I use Windows!

Windows....used to it since ages....so it is some kind of habit; used to the problems it brings along and developed avoidance strategies :)

i use both macosx and windows (nt4, 2kpro, xppro, vista).

macosx and vista at home, others at work.

Windows but only because I'm used to it. Linux will be the replacement for the future.

OMG..I had to google this acronym  ...I'd call you a BOFH but although the B, F and H are befitting- luckily you're not an operator :) ..also just a user like me....so you're BUFH....

Btw, here's a profound philosophical question:

Why is it only drug dealers and software developers call their clients 'users'?

I converted from Windows to Mac about 3 years ago and love it. And the change wasn't very difficult at all. I would never switch back to a PC unless I need to for certain programs. Although Macs are a bit more expensive, for me, it's worth it.

I don't think that German biologists are necessarily lazy (in regards to Windows)....the exposure to Windows (and the market) is much bigger there than in the US (as far as I remember). I never considered owning a Mac while I was living in Germany.
