Has anybody used Vector NTI software for cloning? - (Feb/18/2015 )

I usually design my cloning manually. I mean I have bookmarked the best online software in my Chrome and when I need I use those immediately. For example when I need to view RE sites, find reverse complement sequence or find the weights of insert/vector for ligation I immediately open those webpages and design right away.

But at my current lab people use Vector NTI by Life Technologies. I have never used it. I am happy with my own method, but I would like to know your opinion about it.

Have you ever used any other software for cloning?

I used it a number of years ago when academic use was free, and found it OK. At the time it was one of the few programs available that could handle that sort of stuff well. There are lots of programs that are now as good if not better than Vector NTI. Try Genious if you want a good non-free system. There are also a lot of free programs, but they typically aren't quite as good, but... they are free.

Thank you bob1

Vector NTI never recovered from being bought by Life Technology. They discontinued MacOS support, and made it expensive, even for academic labs. No one I know uses it any more. Genious seems to be the best of the current crop of for-profit versions, although CLC Bio is also pretty good. Most of the NGS support is from free software, although nicely packaged. I think that some of the free software such as IGV from the Broad, or Web Apollo is also very good.

We use CLC bio and I am happy with this.

Of course: its not something you would by as a person, its something the lab has to buy.
