Obtaining Blood in Small Laboratory Animals by Cardiac Puncture
(Clinical Pathology Laboratory, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences)
A large amount of blood can be obtained from small laboratory animals by cardiac or posterior vena cava puncture. This procedure should be used only when exsanguinating the animal. If a study protocol requires repeated blood collections from the same animal, then retro-orbital bleeding is the method of choice.

Retro-orbital Bleeding of Small Laboratory Animals
(Clinical Pathology Laboratory, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences)
A sufficient quantity of blood can be collected from small laboratory animals by puncturing the orbital venous plexus in rats or the orbital venous sinus in mice. Blood can be sampled repeatedly from this site without causing blindness or permanent damage to the eye.
