Does SDS-PAGE help in subspeciation? - (Sep/12/2005 )

How does sds-page help in subspeciation and molecular epidemiology?

-micdagger-

yes, different applications of SDS-PAGE (especially when followed by westernblot) can be helpful for diffentiation of subspecies, though more often genetic approaches are taken for differentiation and epidemiology (RFLPs, SNPs etc.)

hi
i don't think that sdsPAGE is useful for subspecies analysis..sometimes it is not useful for species identification also. It is better if you use a genotipic methods...

Yes and no laugh.gif If you have for example a very specific monoclonal antibody wich can detect only one epitope presewnt in only some subspecies then yes SDS PAGE will be useful cause you need to run the protein and blot them.

As a technique per se no cause it doesn't give any information between two subspecies if you look at the entire protein compartiment 90% of the proteins will be identical so SDS PAGE won't help you alone !

On the genetic approach I would add to the list PFGE (piulse fiel gel electrophoresis) that's how we discriminate between Neisseria Meningitidis sub species (A ST-5 from A ST-7)
