Adding glutamine to expired media - -should I, and how much? (Jun/26/2005 )

I have DMEM that is expired for 1-2 years. The tech service people told me they have used expired media successfully. But sometimes the glutamine may not be enough, as it breaks down over time. Anyone with any experience with this- if I want to keep on using my expired DMEM, is it a good idea to top up with glutamine? I have stock glutamine- how much should I add to the media bottle?

Yes glutamine degrades and ther is no way to know that what percentage is degraded therefore I will add additional 2 mM. It should not harm.

hi, thanks. I read somewhere that degraded glutamine releases NH4+ which can be toxic to cells, though can be buffered by serum. Any experience with that?
