Is microchip the same as microarray and why does it call as "chip" ?

I think the slide version of microarray was first developed at the UCSF. During '90s when the IT industry was doing great, I presume people in the biological sciences also wanted to mingle with the then 'in' crowd!

On a different note, if I am correct, the old microarrays were made using some modified version of silica (the computer chip!). Correct me if anyone knows the real story behind "chip"!
