Study of gene family evolution - (Nov/04/2008 )

Hi Friends.
I have a gene family having 8 gene members in arabidopsis. Only two of them have been functionally characterized. I am characterizing the rest of the genes. I am here in need or help and guidance. I have to carry out evolutionary studies of this gene family and also do some functional predictions. I just have their gene sequences and sequences of some related genes from other species. Does anybody here has experience in carrying out such bioinformatics studies. I would greatly appreciate any help and guidance to get this started.

Hi vishy,

that's depend in what you are interessted in and rather where do you want those data to be published?

Biologiest may be interessted in chromosomal location, ortholoug genes, transcription factors, sequence similarity, etc...
Maybe they are also interessted in how many splice variants do they have, where is their location within the cell or perhaps they want to know something about their function like the GO or KEGG as well as Biocarta....

Hii

Thanks for the reply. I am interested in studying the gene family evolution in perspective of the functional divergence of these genes. Also, the possible duplication events and the changes in the residues leading to the divergence. I have tried GO but no positive hits so far.
