US election - Avaaz petition (Oct/28/2008 )

Pages: 1 2 3 4 5 Next

It's less than a week before the USA goes to the polls in one of the most important elections ever. The world is watching, somewhat nervously, to see the outcome. Avaaz.org is a global people-power movement that has prepared an ad to show the citizens of the US what the rest of the planet is thinking about in the election. Here is the text of their latest message:-

"Dear friends,

Conservatives are getting desperate and dirty in the US elections.
Watch our new global advertisement calling for hope, tolerance and change as Americans head to the polls.

Watch the Ad now

Right now, desperate conservatives are employing the dirtiest of tactics in the US election -- distributing millions of videos, online ads and fliers deceptively linking Obama with terrorism, deliberately inciting hatred against Muslims and foreigners, and creating a sense of global fear and suspicion amongst Americans voters.

We won't remain silent in the face of these negative and misleading global messages. That's why Avaaz members from across the world have made a positive advertisement calling for change, which we aim to have viewed by millions of Americans before they go to the polls in just one week.

American talk shows are looking for what is hot online, and together we can reach the global numbers required to attract the national attention to counter their dirty tricks head on. Click below to watch the ad and sign its message:

US Avaaz members have asked for this help. The ad doesn't tell people who to vote for, but its overriding message of tolerance, diplomacy, human rights and equality is unmistakable. If the ad hits the media airwaves, it will reach the nation's undecided voters just as they are starting to tune in -- and are determining which issues will underpin their vote.

A week is an eternity in politics. We've witnessed before what happens when there's the ugly combination of race, politics and the threat of terrorism: at the last moment, citizens shift their vote in droves as they're made to be fearful about their own security.

Watch this latest ad and then put your name to endorse its compelling and respectful message:

In recent weeks, we surveyed Avaaz members about the messages important to convey to US voters -- this is an opportunity to have those voices broadcast directly to key constituencies in the US.

So much depends on this election -- our climate, the war in Iraq, the Iran crisis, our global commitment to human rights. Help counter the voices of extremism, with this positive and powerful message of hope.

With hope,

Brett, Ricken, Graziela, Iain, Paula, Alice, Paul, Pascal, Milena, Veronique -- the entire Avaaz team

All the best, people, and be nice to one another. wink.gif

I guess Republicans don't have views and values and are not part of the world's people.

Hi swanny,

"made a positive advertisement calling for change,....."
"The ad doesn't tell people who to vote for..... "

I'm just curious why the Avaaz ad is not actively endorsing a candidate. Incredibly, the GOP's resonating message of no hope, no change wink.gif can be heard across north america and world wide. There's no other country more attuned to and nervously watching the US political comings and goings than Canada. After all, I can see bits of NY, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine from my house.

We have a saying here- when the US sneezes, Canada catches a cold. And in no time, the simple cold has degenerated into necrotising pneumonia (if there's such a thing). Let us wish then that it would be right candidate/political party who will be elected this time and bring about this CHANGE they promised during the campaign. This I would put all my hopes on.

Thanks for the links....

It would probably be much more accurate to say:

"Avaaz.org is an independent, not-for-profit global campaigning organization that works to ensure that the views and values of the world's people that agree with the views and values of Avaaz.org inform global decision-making."

-HomeBrew-

Agree entirely, homebrew. Don't think those folks care what the world thinks - they just want the world to adopt their bias.

And if the elections work similar as in 2004 (and 2000?) then it really doesn't matter who'll have more votes. Awkward voting machines, obstacles in voter registration and voter suppression, improper purges of voter lists, etc etc. A long list of improprieties and strange events, imo improper for a country that claims to be a democracy. wacko.gif

Democracy and republican democracy are really not the same, hb

I've been having a "necrotising pneumonia" for 8 years now.. tough on the lungs.. tongue.gif

I just altered their sentence -- it seems to be a complete sentence to me as is, but perhaps it would be clearer if it said:

"Avaaz.org is an independent, not-for-profit global campaigning organization that works to ensure that those views and values held by the world's people that agree with the views and values of Avaaz.org inform global decision-making."

Where is the original an incomplete sentence?

"Where is the original an incomplete sentence?"
Huh..did you mean where in the original is an incomplete sentence? Or where in the original that I altered is a complete sentence? Or where in the altered original is an incomplete sentence? Shldn't this be in the Scientific English subforum tongue.gif ?

But touché...I reread your altered sentence and yes, it's as complete as the genome sequencing of E coli 042 blush.gif and the second improved altered one is even better...can I just ask why you think an organisation couldn't/shouldn't promote the views and values they believe in if there are no laws broken nor ethical concepts violated?
