endnote tricks - Can I do this with endnote? (Oct/23/2008 )

I'm in the process of writing my PhD thesis using Microsoft Word 2007 and endnote X1. I'm about to write my second chapter which is my paper that is going to be submitted to a journal ultimately. I want to write the second chapter as a paper and will submit it 'as is', which will save me time rewriting the paper.

After finishing my first chapter (a loooooong introduction), I already got 170+ references listed at the end of my thesis. If I continue to write my 'paper' as second chapter, the reference number will add up from 170. So my question here: Can I copy my second chapter as a paper with all those references automatically renumbered? What I mean by this is: If the number for the first reference used in the second chapter is 171, can I have it changed to 1 when copying it to an independent word document? If so, how?

I hope I made myself clear. thanks wink.gif wink.gif

I do not use Endnote but use Zotero. I have not tried doing this ever but I think it should work with Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V (copy and paste) to new word document.

Else, make a duplicate of the file . . (make a copy of the original word document in another location or duplicate with new name) . . and delete the first chapter from the duplicate file so that this document has only the chapter 2.

Try and see; and also let us know how it does.

I agree with Bungalow Boy.

Put your Chapter 2 in a new word document, then the reference number will start from 1.

I would try save as/renaming document, unformatting the citations, deleting chaper 1 and reformatting citations. Can't say that I've actually tried what you're trying to do, but I have gone back and expanded/added new citations to an already-formatted document after unformatting.
