Decide which cell line to use - (Sep/30/2008 )

Hello everyone ... I hope you are fine and doing well !
I want to know how to choose a cell line when designning an experiment, what is the general standards for choosing a cell line ? I have started my study at a lab, and I will be very grateful if anyone explain to me this point ...
Thank you very much

Usually we select cell lines based on the experiment. For eg. As we are interested in neuronal physiology, we work with neuronal cell lines and primary neuronal cultures. I know people who work with renal physiology work with HEK 293 (its embryonic kidney cell line). But it really has depends on the experiments and the questions you wish to address.

Actually 293 are now recognised to be of neural crest origin, they don't function like kidney cells.

cell lines are in first place models of a) native primary cells, or b) pathogenic cells f.i. cancer;

the model follows the hypothesis; various disciplines have standard models which should be taken into consideration...
