Can anyone tell me the difference? - Quick Qeustion (Aug/30/2008 )

Whats the difference if any between the terms lymphocyte and leukocyte? When i hear the word lymphocyte and picture the lymphoid cell linegage of cells as oppossed to myeloid but when someone uses leukocyte it just seems as its a different word for saying lymphocyte. Can anyone clear this up for me.

Thanks

lymphocytes are a sub-class of leukocytes

there are many leukocytes which are not lymphocytes like macrophages or granulocytes

So even though macrophages are from myeloid progenitors and are formed when monocytes extravasate into tissue they are called leukocytes?

-BlastedbyaSoarer-

Leuko = White Cytes = cells. Leukocytes are what otherwise are known as White Blood Cells.

Going to the most basic - Blood has red cells, white cells, and platelets. So omit the red and platelets. Whatever cells remain are white blood cells/leukocytes.

yes

why so complicated? leu = white. so leukocytes just means "white" blood cells.
are macrophages red? nah

it doesnt matter where these cells come from.

Ok thanks for that, make it much clear now.
