Why my animal model for breast cancer didn't work? - (Jul/23/2008 )

To induce mammary carcinoma in rats, i gave 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) orally which diluted in corn oil for 100mg per 1kg rat's body weight. Based on previous literature, the tumors should have shown after at least 1 to 2 months. But it's already more than 4 months, and still no sign of it. Does anyone know why????

not my field but - isnt that the key question - why would it work in one group of rats and not another?

Do you use the same rat strain?
Do you have the same supplier for 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA)?
How many (different) groups showed the tumor formation?

I gave the DMBA to 1 group only(10 rats), just to see how long the tumor take to emerge, whether the agent really causing breast tumor to rats, and if it do, how severe the cancer is. All rats are Sprague-Dawley, and the DMBA is from Sigma, same supplier as most people had used before this.
