Olympic Games - (Jul/15/2008 )

hi guys,
lately in the news it's all about the Olympic games, and how the reporters are going to be there in the best seats giving the best news. what i find very strange is that they're sending people that once were good and almost got a medal in the Mexican group, like 12 or 16 years ago, and they're being sent again!!! are there no good new talents or what? i think i'm integrating here "in the news" and the "rant and rave" threads....the worst part are the interviews:

"well, i'm preparing to participate, but if i loose it doesn't matter, i did what i could"

what kind of mental preparation is that??? i find it hard to believe that some of the people in the mexican olympic group are the best options...
what is it like in your countries?

At least here they have to follow some criteria, successful participations in national/international competitions, position in world rankings, special sporting achievements limits (minimum height of jump, time of run etc). There are enough fat, overpaid officials in bureaucratic federations to control this laugh.gif.

We're not in panic mode yet so I guess we're also watching and waiting......for the winter olympics biggrin.gif .....seriously, if there are any anomalies happening...I'm almost sure that we've also developed quite sophisticated methods for covering them up...( what a bunch of cynics we all are smile.gif )

why not start another poll...an off-beat one: the most doped-out country? the best uniform? the best/worst medals to participant ratio...the least humble (thinking that they're always the best laugh.gif)

The warden doesn't give me much time to watch the news, but...

Couldn't those people who were the best 12 or 16 years ago, still be the best?

On a side note, I doubt I'll watch the olympic... I have an odd super power... Yes, darnit, I said SUPER POWER. I have a few. One of them is the ability to make the team I'm routing for...lose... sigh... I didn't ASK for this power, DANGIT, it was THRUST upon me...But as we have all learned from reading and watching spiderman, "With great power comes great responsibility..."

My power works best in person. The more important the game, the more severe the loss suffered by the team I route for...

Around 87 the Washington Redskins won the superbowl. However, that year I actually managed to get tickets to a game and went... That game was the ONLY game they lost...

One of the years the Braves won the world series, I WENT to the stadium to watch a game TWICE. EXCELLENT seats both times. In fact, the second time I was only about four rows up from the batters box... They lost both times...In one game they were way ahead and then Poof...lead gone...fun gone...game gone... The second time, was the game in which camminettie ran over Greg Olson and ended Olson's career...

yes...it's a burden...but it's mine to bear and I bear it with responsibility...

I am, however, thinking of hiring myself out... For enough money, I'll route for the team of your choice and make them lose...

You should use it for betting, until the teams ban you from coming.

"Old" athletes who still win, this reminds me of Ulrike Meyfarth, she was 1972 and 1984 Olympic champion in high jump. But this is and was a so rare event, here she's now a legend. But 1972 she was 16 years old laugh.gif . Age do matter...

about the older people still being the same...well, it'd be kinda sad if that happens, then where is all the youth and the thousands of births everyday? none of them were "gifted" to be talented sporties? anyway, all of them look very excited about traveling to china, i guess i'd be excited as well smile.gif

us being the best...we'll have to see, by statistical probabilities china is the biggest rival i think, in recent years they've been becoming one of the most powerful countries in many ways, and sports is also one of them, besides, they're the host country!

i put a poll about the most doped-out country, with countries representing some members of bioforum. i think the least humble is pretty clear to all of us laugh.gif, and for the best uniform, there are ~100+ participating countries and the poll allows only 10 options sad.gif

i want to see the doped up olympic games.
they have the normal olympics, the special olympics, and the disabled olympics... i want superhuman strength olympics.
i want to see the atheletes filled to the eyeballs with steriods and whatever else they use to have superhuman strength.
that would be interesting to watch. what would they do to win... what would they look like.
imagine if there were no rules to the extent of having the advantage. drugs, yes... implants, yes... telescopic ankles, yes... genetic engineering, yes. no drug testing, no limits.

if only the tour de france would take the same approach. 1 second lead... come on. i want a 1 hour lead by a guy part man, part machine, filled with essence of cheetah... who has to be attached to a nuclear powered generator after each leg of the race.
