Glioma cell lines - (Jun/30/2008 )

Hi,

I have just started working with glioma cell lines (U87MG, U373MG) and I am wondering how safe they are to work with? I found that these glioma cells are highly tumorigenic. Should I use special precautions?

Thanks!

Just use standard cell culture precautions, they are no more tumorigenic than HeLa or any other commonly used cell line.

Also, they won't form tumours in people with normal immune systems due to the immune response against foreign bodies. Remember, the tumourigenesis studies are done in immune suppressed/knock out animals.
