Question on cell line - (Jun/13/2008 )

Hi,

That many cell lines are made from different virus infections e.g. HeLa cells. They are at BSL 2. Will it pose any risk to the researcher culturing it or is it safe enough if one wear gloves?

Will those virus be inhaled or cause any infection to the researcher?

Thx.

Many cell lines may have viral genome integration, but none of them produce virus, let alone replicating virus (except when you specifically want to produce viral vectors, and there are safe-guards there). So, you are safe from that angle.

It is good to wear gloves so as not to infect them! :-) Mainly. But in any case, you are always safe not eating, drinking, inhaling or self-inoculating cell lines.
