Possible or not? - (May/31/2008 )

I have another bout of self-doubts, so please tell me:
is it possible for an ADHDer (mildly pronounced, and very motivated) to be a succesful scientist?
There is this archetype of a distracted professor, but I don't know really...

Phd or master?
But if you manage school with a qualification for university entrance, why not further? Perhaps you can ask your supervisor or a good colleague for some support and help, e.g. that you have someone who "pedals" you a bit and looks after you, controls that you make progress, discusses problems, motivates you, etc.
And try to get some real relaxation and recreation in your free time, the whole time work or just thinking about it won't help. Sports, stress relaxation (e.g. yoga), etc. can help.
To conquer your weaker self is one of the bigger problems, if you have to work on your own... sleep.gif

Well I already have a Master's and I'd like to do PhD. So far bad choice in supervisors (essientially my former one did bad science almost on purpose), but I hope this time will be better. The lab is great and I don't want to ruin anything. I am a self-reliant, investigative person and I haven't done any disaster for several years so far (breaking minor glassware about twice a year doesn't count), sometimes I break a gel or something like that, I never break important stuff or toxines, which I am paranoid about. Focus doesn't fail me in this case. Eventually work gets done. No means clinical investigation. I can ruin a few mice, but I wouldn't work with humans.

I'm just scared and stressed. And in the new place, doing basic school mistakes about methods I did 100 times before, and flawlessly. They have their own ways to do that. Is that normal during first weeks, or I'd already earn bad opinion?

Think so. New ones bring along disturbance in the daily routine (and other/new methods) and who likes this? So they want to show you that you're new and inexperienced and they are the long-established outranking dudes (especially old technicians are cranky here). But if you're confident and flexible you should get along with it. And asking the others helps, if they use different ways, techniques etc. they can tell or show and you don't disturb the 'holy' organization and hierarchy so much.

Thanks smile.gif
I am asking as much as I can and at the same time I am trying to do enough on my own not to bore or disturb them. I am doing also the dirty work, like distilled water refills and all kind of "washing the deck" stuff. So maybe I'll earn my place in the team. I'd like that. I like that lab.
