FCS composition - (May/28/2008 )

I assume that anyone analyzed the composition of FCS (FBS), particularly for growth factors and hormones;

does anyone know a source or reference to FCS composition?

Nobody knows the full content of FCS. Suppliers do look at some parameters of content:

Haemaglobin
Total protein concentration

To look at ever individual hormone, growth factor (some of which are unknown), ions, salts etc etc would be an impossibilty.

This is why serum free media has not taken massively i.e. used in every lab world wide. If they knew the content, the use of FCS/FBS would be totally redundent.

thanks for competent answer;
I am especially interested in possible ranges of concentration for EGF (HB-EFG), HGF, IGF, TGF, BDNF and other neurothrophic factors and insuline; I still suppose that there are at least partial analysis for distinct compounds available... mellow.gif
