Photoshop help--How measure the selected area - (May/09/2008 )

If I want to use photoshop to measure the colony number and area of 2D gel image, how to do that.
I can selected all the colonies in the grey scale, then how to get the number and area?
someone can help me with that? thanks.

I would suggest using ImageJ for this type of work. It's free and widely used, and there are a million plugins written by your fellow scientists. Here are some examples:

In ImageJ, you can easily threshold the colonies, count them, and calculate area for each colony.

Gel Analysis

Plot the peaks graphically.
