Innovative powerpoint slides.... - (Apr/01/2008 )

Hi all,

I am a budding PhD student and I have been asked to do a presentation!!!!! unsure.gif Well, I am confident about speaking but I would like to have some nice pictures in my slides, something funny and decent enough to put in a slide. I basically want to draw the attention of my audience to my slide and what I talk.. So Can u please give me links where I can get some good design layouts and good/funny pictures to have in my slides. This would be of great help. Thanks.

Don't overdo. A clear simple layout with only some really necessary pictures is normally the better choice. I.e a picture from the organism of interest, or some equipment and finally result pictures if available.
I used sometimes in institute (non-public) talks cartoons e.g. from Larson, but only a few and if they really fit.

Just pictures to have a cute/beautiful/kitschy decoration, I'd avoid completely, it distracts audience and the tastes differ...

Thank you for your suggestions... I shall keep that in mind.. I was wondering if u know a site where I can find presentation slides which represents the science community, like a DNA or proteins or things like that... I think it's great that you're excited about doing this, but as others have said, be careful to not overdo it. Some of the best talks I've seen are with black text on a white background, and the only graphics were data. Personally, I find slides distracting, and if they are loud or full of text, everyone will be looking at the slides and not you. It is also my opinion that injudicious use of graphics or animations in an attempt to be funny or to make your talk stand out makes me think less of the speaker. It's simply not professional. Focus on the content of your talk, and then pick graphics or animations that are directly related to your subject matter and help you to illustrate a point. If you do choose to use graphics from e.g. a google image search, make sure you are 100% sure what it's showing. (I know someone who once showed a big, fancy confocal image of a cell with three colours, but when asked about it, had no idea what type of cell it was, what the colours represented, or where it came from! It was very embarrassing for him.)

With regard to a slide template, I tend to make my own. In case you don't know how to do this, it's very easy. Open a new presentation, and choose View -> Master -> Slide master. Any background colour, borders, graphics, shading or colouring scheme you set up in there becomes the template for your entire talk. I like to put one of my nice microscope images in the upper left-hand corner of all my slides, although something like a DNA helix would be fine as well.

I hope your presentation goes well,

Ginger
